Heidi DeLeon (2012)  In her own words: “When I was 14, my father murdered my mother. We were poor and we saw the abuse my mother endured daily. I knew she loved me. There were many ups and downs after my mother’s death; I began to have problems with alcohol and drugs. By the time I was 20 I found myself on a bus to State Prison. I was in and out of prison for four years. The birth of my son four years ago changed my life. I started  to work to pay off my loans and went to school where I received my certificate as a drug and alcohol counselor. My goal is to become a professor at a community college or university.”

Heidi is currently in the undergraduate degree program at California State University, Dominguez Hills, majoring in African Studies.

Monika R. Williams (2011) Monica was recognized SILA’s winner of the Soroptimist Women’s Opportunity Award. A remarkable woman who left  an abusive marriage of eleven years. As a single mother of three children, working full-time, she is pursuing her Bachelor's Degree in Forensic Accounting. Monika's dream job is to do the kind of work the Los Angeles Controller’s office does.
