Soroptimist International of Los Angeles

Soroptimist International of Los Angeles (SILA): For over 85 years, our club has served the women of Los Angeles through our programs of service. Our members have included the first woman to be superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District, the first woman to be the manager of the City of Los Angeles personnel department, a justice of the court of appeals, professionals and executives in retail, government, religious organizations, and in the not for profit sectors.

In addition to involvement in the Soroptimist International programs to honor and recognize women and girls working to improve the status of women and girls, SILA has two signature local service projects.

Our SILA Fellowship is granted each year to a woman who is a citizen of the United States and resident of the State of California. Preference is given to relatively young women completing their graduate education rather than to those making career changes. The application is added to our web site each year. The next application will be added in January, 2007.

We own and operate, through a private not-for-profit organization, a second step shelter for women and their children who are victims of domestic violence. These shelter and program resources allow women to live in a safe and secure location for an extended period with their children while they work toward independence and a strong family life.
