Soroptimist's Relationship with the United Nations (UN ): Article 17 of the United Nations Charter provides for non-governmental organization (NGO) consultative status with the UN's Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). ECOSCO oversees UN activities and policies promoting human rights. SI is one of over 1,000 NGOs to hold this status. This enables SI to place items on the ECOSOC agenda, submit written statements for circulation to all members of the council, make oral statements at ECOSOC meetings and contribute to other UN gatherings and seminars. It is in this forum that SI representatives advocate for the Soroptimist mission, advancing the status of women and girls. SI representatives are appointed volunteers working in one of the four UN centers in New York City, Paris, Vienna and Geneva.
