She led a Court of Appeal division.
As administrative presiding justice, she led the district.
As a judge in a time when “lady judges” were an oddity,
she was seen, at first, as a misfit.
“Why is she not home darning socks?” some wondered.
She quickly proved she could do the job, and do it superbly.
The “misfit” became the exemplar.
Her written opinions shone;
they reflected knowledge, and wisdom, and care.
And Millie Kluckhohn, born in Ida Grove, Iowa,
became the most revered and accomplished jurist
in the history of the State of California.
Appropriately, her name is emblazoned on the building housing
the Los Angeles County Law Library.
